Wide range of weapons and abilities to use against different kinds of enemies The destruction physics and animations are fantastic, and never get old I'm usually not a fan of tower defence games, but they've done so much right here that I actually stayed engaged throughout the story and finished the whole game. I'm really glad I played this though it's a great mix of genres (again, like The Riftbreaker), really highly polished and just simply good fun. You can really see the roots of The Riftbreaker here - it feels like that game must have naturally evolved out of this - similar graphics, grid based placement, turrets and defence against waves of enemies. That aside though, X-Morph: Defense is a very solid game, lots of fun, and I recommend it for sure.
Just don't expect you can pick it up to play with your buddy in another house without some serious time setting it up first, if it even works for you. My only complaint is that co-op play is very tricky to do online rather than on the couch with another person, but given the nature of the game it's little surprise. The story mode has a nice difficulty curve, and survival mode is surprisingly fun and intense. Your ship is more powerful in an attacking sense than towers though, so a lot of the game can come down to your ship doing damage whilst you use towers and fences to block off attack paths. You can unlock different weapons and special attacks - all very intuitive, and fun. You have your little ship which builds towers, and also shoots at enemies. You can also demolish bridges and buildings, which further alters enemy attack paths. What can count for more is positioning - a major gameplay component is building fences between towers to block off enemy attack paths.
The tower defense elements are fairly straight-forward - there's not a huge variety of towers, but enough to make the differences matter. It was an interesting mix of genres, that was both strategic and exciting. I played it at random whilst working through the unplayed games in my library, and am very glad I did.
